Everyone loves Lavender! Lavender is grown around the world — from southern Europe across to northern and eastern Africa, the Mediterranean, and even southwest Asia to southeast India.

Lavender belongs to the mint family, along with Oregano, Sage, and other fragrant herbs. The botanical name is derived from the Latin verb ‘lavare’ meaning ‘to wash’, a reference to the use of water perfumed by oils of lavender during ancient times. For example, the Greeks used lavender medicinally, making wines and vinegars from the flowers and the stems.

The Romans used lavender to scent their baths and to make perfumes.

The Egyptians and Phoenicians and people of Arabia used it for mummification and perfuming as well.

Today lavender is cultivated for its use as a decorative plant, culinary herb, healing herb, and aromatherapy aid using the essential oil that can be extracted from the plant through steam distillation. With an abundance of uses, lavender is one of the most popular and widely used medicinal herbs.

It is such a popular plant that there are more than 450 identified lavender varieties or cultivars.

The History of Lavender Valley

Lavender Valley was first established in 2001 by Dale and Kailai Harris. The first commercial production of essential oil was in 2004. With the sale of the company in 2014, Lavender Valley later moved to its new location in Mt. Hood Parkdale in 2015. The Harris family continues to be trusted advisors to Lavender Valley.

To honor the move, we planted a total of 11,417 lavender babies from 10 different Lavender varieties. Our plants were propagated and nurtured by Lavender At Stonegate, and are true to variety and Oregon grown.
